Houston Christian University’s (HCU) Veteran Services has been on the frontlines of serving the needs of student veterans and their families since the department’s formation in 2016 and is now expanding its reach to serve the needs of those connected to military service across the campus community.

With that broader focus, comes a new name, Veteran & Military Services, signaling an intentional shift to better represent the full range of students the department serves—extending beyond veterans alone.

“At Houston Christian University, we are committed to serving those who serve. Expanding our name to Veteran & Military Services reflects the full military-affiliated community we support, including veterans, active-duty service members, ROTC cadets and military families,” said Cody Harrington, Director of Veteran & Military Services.

“This commitment is reflected in our recognition as a Top 10 Military Friendly® School, but more importantly in our daily work to ensure every military-connected student at HCU finds the support, opportunity and Christ-centered community needed to succeed academically, professionally and spiritually.”

While veterans remain a central focus, the new name reflects the full scope of the population the office serves and aligns with the growth of several initiatives department administrators have developed, including the VALOR (Veteran Academic Leaders for Outreach and Resources) peer mentorship program, partnerships with veteran service organizations and expanded outreach to military-connected students who may be considering enrolling at HCU.

By broadening the language of the department name, administrators hope it makes it clearer to prospective and current students that they have a dedicated team ready to walk alongside them throughout their academic journey.

The change also reflects HCU’s continued investment in programs and partnerships designed to support student success both inside and outside the classroom.

The office will soon experience another transition as plans are underway to relocate the department from its current location in the Brown Administrative Complex to the second floor of the Hinton Center.
