Houston, Texas, Nov. 13, 2025Houston Christian University (HCU) recently held an official scarfing ceremony to welcome Wakiza (Kiza) IV, a new Siberian Husky who will serve as the University鈥檚 live mascot, succeeding her predecessor, Wakiza III, following her retirement. The name Wakiza, meaning A Determined Warrior, reflects the strength, perseverance and enduring spirit of HCU鈥檚 Husky tradition.

During a special ceremony on the front lawn of the Morris House, HCU President Robert Sloan ceremoniously placed a white HCU alumni bandana on Wakiza III to pay tribute to her reign and signify her retirement and an orange bandana bearing the HCU logo around Kiza IV鈥檚 neck, marking the beginning of her journey as the newest face of Husky pride. The scarfing ceremony remains one of the University鈥檚 most cherished traditions, celebrating the continuity of its mascot legacy.

Kiza IV was first introduced to faculty, staff and students during Opening Convocation to welcome her in her new role. Born March 7, 2025, the eight-month-old Siberian Husky was selected from in Ontario, Canada, and has spent the last five weeks training at Rover Oaks Pet Resort in Houston.

Rover Oaks has partnered with the University to train both Kiza IV and HCU鈥檚 sled team. The program equipped Kiza IV with the skills to represent the University with confidence, develop proper manners and embody the Husky spirit at athletic events, campus activities and community appearances.

鈥淜iza IV is a shy girl at first but is very sweet and playful once she warms up. She鈥檚 a wonderful addition to the HCU legacy of mascots,鈥 said Jenna Haynes, HCU Spirit Program Coordinator and Head Cheer Coach.

As the official HCU live mascot, Kiza IV will reside on campus with the University鈥檚 head musher, Linnea Hagman, and will be cared for by members of the HCU sled team.

With her arrival, Kiza IV proudly continues the legacy of Siberian Huskies who have represented Houston Christian University with spirit, grace and unwavering pride.
